Three Interpreting Questions as 2023 Ends

Question 1: Why is the interpreting (and translation) industry so fragmented for its size? Is it actually more fragmented than it ought to be, or are we going about measuring it the wrong way? How should we measure it to get a better sense of market size and fragmentation going forward? Has the industry ever been more consolidated in the past, or not? How far back do we have reliable data?

Question 2: How would someone go about making a video game of interpreting? Does one already exist? What are existing games closest to simulating being an interpreter? Are video games the right way of thinking about interpreting, or would platforms (e.g. Twitch) be a better mental model, if there is a distinction? Has/will VR provide the answer?

Question 3: Imagine tomorrow some sort of software will replace interpreters and do it cheap enough and reliably enough and at a high enough skill level that all interpreters are removed from court/legal and hospital/medical lists and no longer get hired for those jobs. What should those interpreters do next?
